Answers to Frequently Asked Questions - Installing and Operating RiceIPM

1. How do I install RiceIPM and should it take this long to install?

To install RiceIPM

If you have an old computer (less than PentiumI), an older version of Windows (95), and you have to install Internet Explorer 5 as well as RiceIPM, the installation package can take up to 20 minutes to install. You may need to reboot several times to update the software settings. However, the result will be an improved set of software on your computer that will allow you to run various programs in RiceIPM. Please read the instructions inside the CD case for more information.

2. What should I do if I get a message that the screen format is not adequate to run RiceIPM?

You will need to change the format.  In the Start menu, go to Settings/Control Panel/Display.  Click on the tab Settings and set the screen display to the minimum 800 by 600 pixels.  At a setting of 640 by 480 pixels, you will not be able to view all of RiceIPM on the screen.

3. What should I do if I can't access the Community IPM Manual?

If you are unable to access the Community IPM Manual, make sure that you have installed the Adobe Acrobat Reader from the CD.  To do this, go to Settings in the Start menu/Control Panel/Add/Remove programs and click on Install or Add Programs.  Browse the CD, double-click on the Acrobat folder and double-click on the .exe file and click Finish to install the program or download from www.adobe.com.

4. Why can't I hear anything when I play RiceIPM videos?

First, note that there is only sound for some videos, such as the trap/barrier system for rat management. If you do not get any sound with videos which clearly should have sound, then the problem may be that you have not switched on or plugged in independent speakers to your computer or you do not have a sound card.

5. Can I do anything to slow down videos that run too fast?

We have found that on certain older computers, the Windows software runs the videos at too fast a speed.  You could try updating to the latest Microsoft media player from www.microsoft.com.

6. Where can I find out how to use Lucid keys on RiceIPM?

An introduction to Lucid keys is provided by an interactive tutorial that can be found when you open the Lucid Key to insects and spiders.  This 5-minute tutorial will provide you with a basic introduction.  Alternatively, go to the Tutorial in the Introduction section of RiceIPM.  If you want to know more about Lucid, look in the Help files that can be accessed on the tool bar at the top of each Lucid key or go to the special Lucid web site at www.lucidcentral.org.

7. When I click on the Lucid logo or open the Lucid Player from the Start menu, how can I find the RiceIPM keys?

Scroll down the folders list in the "Choose a Key.." box and make sure the C:\Program Files\lucid\RiceIPM keys folder is open.  You will then be able to see the list of keys available.

8. How can I make the videos work with XP and the latest Windows media player?

If you have Windows XP and the latest media player - you will find that the videos do not run when you click on "Play". To view these videos, open up Windows Explorer and select D drive (i.e. the CD drive - RICEIPM). Open the source (src) folder and the video folder to see the list of videos. Double click on the video you wish to view.
